Why Not or Why?

March 27, 2011

Over the weekend I got to thinking: As I get older, the question I ask myself has changed from “why not” to “why.”

For example, at 21 years old my college friends would call me up on Friday night at 9 and ask me to go to a dance club 45 minutes away. Asking myself “why not,” I would get ready and jump in the car without hesitation.

Now fast forward 10 years.

At 31, I am sitting on the couch at 9 on a Friday night, watching TV, exhausted from the work week. My friend calls me up and asks me to meet her for a few drinks at a bar that’s about 2 minutes from my house – within walking distance in fact. But now, instead of asking myself “why not,” I ask myself “why.”

Why would I want to change out of my comfy pajamas, go outside in the cold, and walk over to the bar just to subject myself to loud music and drunk people who bump into you without saying excuse me. Wow! How my perspective on fun has changed.

Do you still ask yourself why not or why? How has your perspective on fun changed in the last 10 years?

I am definitely the “why” person, especially when it comes to having to change out of my comfy sweats.

I think it’s kids that change that. Although I definitely slowed down after I got married, I would get bored sitting around the house too much. Now, I always say “oh, I can do that tomorrow” so I can just stay home :) And I like it that way.

I totally agree. I went to bed at 10:30 last night. I get more excited about sleeping than going out! Also is it just me or has the music gotten louder since our twenties?

My perspective has totally changed. Nowadays the best date I can think of involves me being in my bed alone with a bag of stinky chips and a campy book.

Word, sister friend. Sing it. Preach it. Comfy pj’s on the sofa for sure. I closed down my fair share of bars in my early twenties. Now I can’t even be bothered to go to the opening time. Why on earth would I want to be out of my house that late?! :)

I’m with you. With age comes WISDOM. And comfy pjs on the couch with your favorite DVRed shows? Trumps getting dressed and going out in the cold… EVERY TIME.

*fist bump* (or some other HIP thing to show solidarity)(I didn’t pull that off … did I?)

Change out of PJs? Go out in the cold? Why??? For what?? I’d rather be home in my pajamas with a book so I could read until I fell asleep by 10 pm.

My husband makes a MEAN Pomegranate Martini. Who needs a bar? He makes me the drink, brings it to me and I KNOW he’s a sure thing at the end of the night!

PJ’s for the win! I can be pumped to do something different at 3 and then at 7 I just want to put the kids to bed and get into bed myself!!

I am 31 too and have totally turned into a “why” person. I was kind of hoping it would change after I have the baby, but that is probably wishful thinking, isn’t it?
